July is national ice cream month! What's your favorite flavor?
Submitted by LittleWiseOne.
Do I really have to choose just one?! Because it really depends on my mood. And the truth is, there aren't too many flavors I DON'T like.
So, I guess my favorite kind right now is Bruster's Pistachio. Sweet cream and salty pistachios = heaven.
What do you find interesting or unique about your family history?
Here are a few things - perhaps not unique, but interesting, at least to me!
- Our great grandparents on our mom's side (our Mom-Mom's parents) were from the same village in Hungary, though they did not know each other and did not meet until after they had both immigrated to the states. If I am remembering the story correctly, Grandma Meyer was Grandpa Meyer's house help when his first wife was alive. Some time after his first wife passed, they married, but I seem to remember Mom-Mom saying that he never treated her as he should have - that he favored his first wife and wasn't shy about letting her know that.
- The Meyer surname is not actually accurate - it was Mayer, pronounced like the bologna, but they Americanized it - well, all but our Great Uncle Dominic (who I believe was from Grandpa Meyer's first marriage), who retained the original spelling. I have no idea what Grandma Meyer's maiden name was - I wish I did.
- Our great grandmother on our paternal grandmother's side married her childhood sweetheart when she was in her 70's, I believe. She was 98 when she passed, outliving both of her husbands by many years.
- On both sides of our family, the name Charles is very predominant, though only one person goes by "Charles". Here's the count and how we keep it all straight: my father (Charlie), his father (usually went by his last name), my other grandfather (Buck), his son (Chuck or Butch), my mom's cousin (Charles), his son (Chucky), and one of my dad's uncles (Brother). Needless to say, no one in my generation - on either side! - has felt the compulsion to use the name Charles for their progeny.
- Our mom's parents eloped on Thanksgiving day. He was 26 and she was 17 (I think - do I have that right, Janie?). They won't back "home" separately. After a week or so, Mom-Mom spilled the beans to one of her sisters, and I believe that is when word got out. I am not sure what the reaction was or when they actually got a place of their own (maybe one of my sisters can shed some light on that).
- Another "famous" surname within our family tree comes from our dad's side: Hefner. Do you think we could be heirs to either a lunch meat or - *ahem* - other fortune? (Heh. Not likely.)
- When our mother was pregnant with me, she wanted to use Patricia for my first name. Our paternal grandmother thought that was outrageous since our father had been engaged to a Patricia. A year or two later, our parents reconnected with Pat and her hubby. The four became fast - and best - friends for years. I've always found it humorous and ironic that Mom and Pat became such good friends.
If you could do anything you want tomorrow, what would it be?

Sign a full-price-offered contract on our house!
(A girl can dream, eh?)
How are you celebrating the 4th of July?
We have absolutely nothing planned today, and it feels WONDERFUL
!
After going at break-neck speed for two weeks or more trying to get the
house ready, it is nice to be able to take a kick-back day.
Hubby and I are updating our budget as I visit here. Later I will fire up the grill and throw on some steaks and corn-on-the-cob. I will whip up some brownies or cookies for our holiday dessert. The kids would like to go see fireworks, but I am hoping to convince everyone to just stay home.
Tomorrow it's back to work - weekly house cleaning to keep the house
spic-n-span for potential buyers and going through some boxes that I
don't want to take with us
!
What's your favorite type of donut?
Submitted by tomatshonino.
Do I have to pick just one?
Seriously, donuts are the bane of my existence. I adore them. I know they are horribly bad for me, but I almost can not resist a donut.
This was really bad news when we lived 2 miles from Krispy Kreme.
Anyway, if I go to the Dunkin', I get either Boston Creme or Toasted Coconut. If I happen upon a Krispy Kreme, give me a glazed sour cream, and thankyouverymuch.
Who helped make you the cool person you are today?
Submitted by Amy - Sister Brown Hair Surprise.
But there's another - she's known me even longer. And the best part is, she "gets me".
(This was taken in early 2006. It was the first one of the two of us that I could find - and it was already saved here on Vox. And man,
I can't believe how short my hair was!)
How would you like to be remembered?

What are the goofy nicknames you have for your pet? Bonus points for sharing a picture of him/her.

She sleeps with the youngest and sheds like mad! She is actually a very good cat, though her tentative personality annoys me at times.
This is Zorro (with The Middle). We sometimes call him Spaz or Spaz Cat. He is very high strung! He also loves The Middle like no cat I have ever seen, but he can be quite indifferent with the rest of us.
He likes to sleep on rough fabrics and walks like a tiger. He has an annoying habit of throwing up right after he eats (he eats very fast). Because of that, we oftentimes say he must be bulimic, because he remains very sleek and thin.
You don't have to thank me.
What fictional character do you relate to most and why?
I don't know why I still feel that way as my life is certainly decidedly different that what this girl in turn of the 20th century America experienced.
I guess it is because I read this book when I was in junior high, and something about this character - her no-more-than-average looks, her love of reading and writing, her somewhat difficult relationship with her mother, her sensitivity to the beauty in life despite the harsh reality of where she lived and the things she experienced - spoke to me. I was enthralled with this book. And in many ways I still am. I've read it no less than 2 dozen times since then.
And every time I read it, the girl on the fire escape nibbling on peppermint candy and reading a book
looks just like me.
What's the one thing you're most neurotic about?
Truth be told, I am probably neurotic about many things (shush, you two), but the first thing that comes to mind is clean counter tops. I can't stand to see crumbs or dirt or an-y-thing smudging, sticking to, or blemishing my kitchen counter tops!
I have even been known to wipe off other people's counter tops when I am visiting them.
Yeah, I think that would make me neurotic about clean counter tops, eh?
