It's been a whirlwind week since we arrived in our new city. We are settling into our new-to-us home, though there are, of course, still a lot of boxes to go through. But I am hoping to remedy that over the long weekend. First order of business tomorrow will be to find the box with the extra toilet paper.
Rob and I started our new jobs on Monday. Lots to learn, but we are both enjoying them so far. It's a great place to work. I feel tremendously blessed.
The kids are registered for school and will begin on Tuesday. It will be quite the change for them, especially for the two eldest who will be in classes of over 600 students for each grade level, when for the past two years they have been in a total enrollment per grade of 20 or less!
I think I already mentioned that we had a bit of trouble with the movers - not sure how/if there will be any remedy for that, but if you think about it, pray for God's will in that matter.
We are still awaiting repairs on the house here, but some will be completed this weekend, and the rest by closing, which is still set for 9/19.
All is good to go for our old home; closing still set for the 11th. I think I mentioned that the buyer only wanted some items removed after the inspection, which wasn't too bad - though it would have been nice to avoid the cost to remove asbestos siding/shingles left in the attic :-(. Ah well, it is what it is.
I am going to *try* (key word: try) to catch up on blogs over the long weekend.
Again, let me thank you all for your faithful prayers. God has certainly been at work in our lives! We have so much to be thankful for.
I have a few minutes before heading to church. I should unpack another box, but I am not going to do that right now. It's time to rest a bit and replenish some energy. My feet were aching so much yesterday after unpacking at least 13 boxes - mostly dish packs in the kitchen (translation: those are big boxes, folks). But it was worth it. I was able to make our first home cooked meal in at least a week last night. As much as I enjoy eating out, I think we were all pretty sick of it.
When I have more time, I will tell you about the movers. Nice guys, but things didn't go as they should have. Seems that we were mislead immensely by the sales rep of the moving company. Rob and the Business Manager who he is taking over for will sort it all out I am sure. Suffice to say that the total cost went up 50% because of their miscommunication and what appears to be dishonesty.
Now I know why folks tend to move themselves, even though it is such a hassle.
But anyhow, have I mentioned how nice it is to be home?
Within a few hours of arriving, one set of neighbors came by and introduced themselves. They go to our church! And they have boys just about the same age as our boys. Then an hour or so later, our next door neighbor came by and introduced himself. And he brought homemade cookies his wife had prepared for us.
I think we will like it here on this little cul-de-sac.
Today's plans are church, a cook out hosted by a church family, then more unpacking. Oh. And I have to take The Daughter's friend home. She lives about 30 minutes away, but it's near Costco, and I need some coffee.
Priorities, people, priorities. :-)
Okay, I am about out of time. One last thing: I miss you all. Thanks for all the prayers, good thoughts, and encouragement. It means more than you know. I will try to catch up on reading soon.
Big hugs - *mwah!*
We got to the hotel at about 1:30 AM. We've been to the house this AM for the walk-through. Hopefully the movers will arrive at the house shortly and we can crash there tonight. Worse case (but not really a bad thing), we will stay at the hotel again tonight.
I am so tired!!! And I didn't pack a box. I guess moving, no matter what, is just exhausting.
Cable company is coming tomorrow to set up Internet. We shall see how that goes; perhaps I will be able to check in then. But no certainty on that, as we all know how things like that tend to go.
I can't believe we are finally here...
Sent by Rob to some of our friends in our new town:
So I'm going to be strolling into town tonight around midnight or so looking like the something from the opening scene of "The Beverly Hillbilly's" only with two Honda Civics packed to the gills. What isn't in the original show are two cats (Bella & Zorro) and hotel restrictions on pets.
We are in need of some solution for the cats overnight that does not involve killing them. Any ideas?
Bella is very laid back and likes poetry and long walks on the beach. Zorro is a little more high strung.
I needed that laugh this AM!
What is the one word that perfectly describes your day today?

Seriously. Here I sit on our soon-to-no-longer-be-ours deck as the sun sets, listening to 4 strangers pack all of our belongings into a big white truck. Very surreal. Not all-together bad. Just odd and a bit unsettling. But good too.
Hence the above-stated word.
Rob will pack up the modem tomorrow. Looks like we will also be getting on the road tomorrow and getting into the house on Friday - a day early!
We were going to stay with friends tomorrow night, but the movers thought they were delivering our stuff Friday. They said they'd still do that, but they are Jewish and would prefer not to work Saturday. So, now we will rush on down tomorrow afternoon, stay in a hotel (where we will also sneak in two cats and a tarantula, which is totally stressing me out, because I hate-hate-hate doing stuff like that), and then start moving into the new place that afternoon/evening.
Tonight and tomorrow morning I get to clean. Blech. I thought the house was pretty good, but then they go and move furniture and there are small villages of dust and cat hair.
Would someone just wake me up sometime in September?
It wasn't the movers I saw outside; it was the lawn guy.
At 10 AM, Rob called the sales rep, since they were supposed to be here between 9 & 10. Ten minutes later, the movers themselves called and said they were 20 minutes away.
That was an hour ago.
Lovely.
After this AM, I probably won't be online much, if at all, until sometime next week. Can we say, craziness boys and girls?
Anyway, here's the latest, just in case you were wondering:
- The home inspection addendum came back on Monday afternoon. She just wanted some stuff removed from the yard and attic. Didn't think that was a big deal, until we realized we have to have the stuff in the attic hauled away to the tune of $200 because they *could* be asbestos shingles, left by the previous owners. Grrrr.
- Rob's and my last day at our jobs here was yesterday. The daycare cooks gave me a homemade cheesecake and a spa pillow. As well as a nice card. I also got lots of hugs from folks at the church; what a blessing they have been!
- When I went to get my nails done one last time yesterday afternoon, my friend gave us a beach-themed key holder with our name painted on it. Very creative and adorable. And thoughtful. And she added some cool nail art on the house. When The Youngest saw them, his response was: "Ah. Falcons' colors". Funny kid; everything is referenced through NFL lenses.
- So, three giftings in one day! Have I ever mentioned that I totally lurve gifts!? :-)
- The movers come today to pack. In about an hour. Maybe two. I am hoping it is more like two as I still have so much to do (or feel as if that is the case).
- Oh crap. Just saw someone walking around the yard. Could be the movers already.
See you all on the flip side!
I probably won't be able to blog (outside of possibly some moblogging) as we get into the middle of this week, so thought I'd write an update this morning. Should be fully back online again sometime next week.
Here's the latest:
Soon-to-be home: The sellers agreed to repair all but one item we asked for, so that is a blessing. The termite/moisture inspection is on Wednesday afternoon. We are still slated to move in on Saturday (with a walk-thru on Friday). Closing has been moved up to Sept. 19th at 10 AM.
Current home: The home inspection here was Thursday night. We still haven't heard a word back from the buyer, which I admit does make me nervous! Not sure if they've scheduled the termite/moisture for here yet.
This week's crazy schedule: Rob and I are finishing up at our current jobs today and tomorrow. On Wednesday, the movers come to pack us up. They load the truck on Thursday. We will probably crash somewhere in the area Thursday night so we can finalize any cleaning on Friday morning, then drive down to the new place for our walk-thru at 5 PM. Then our stuff is delivered on Saturday. And we begin our new jobs on Monday! (Not to mention needing to finish enrolling the kiddos in their new schools that week...)
Pray for us over these days as we set aside the things the movers won't take, continue to purge a few things here and there, and finish cleaning the house once everything is moved. Also pray that everything goes smoothly with the packing, loading, transport, and delivery of our household goods.
Again, I thank you immensely for all of the prayers and encouragement!
A month or two ago, as we were preparing the house for sale, I was making frequent trips to Salvation Army with clothes, household goods, and the like. On one trip, I took an HP color photo printer that we'd only used once about 5 years ago. It was packed in the original box and sealed up in the move to this home three years ago.
Or so I thought....
Yesterday, I was working on purging more items in one of our storage areas. Digging through a rather large box full of half used legal pads, old mail, and a potpourri of office-type items, I finally made it to the bottom, only to find...
(You know where this is going, right?)
The HP photo printer.
"Honey, look in this box," I encouraged. Rob gazed at the contents. We looked at each other.
"Remember how I took this printer in it's original box to the Salvation Army a month or two ago?"
We looked at the printer. We look at each other.
Uh oh.
"I wonder what was actually in that printer box...?"
We probably don't want to know.
Moving Lesson #858: always open the sealed boxes, whether you think you know what's in there or not.
